Victim Offender Reconciliation Program (VORP)

VORP CASE CRITERIA
A. VORP can be successful in any case where both Victim and Offender agree to mediate and agree to observe the ground rules of mediation.

Some suggested types of cases:
  •     Telephone code violations
    		•
  •     Assault with or without injury
    		•
  •     Theft
    		•
  •     Vandalism
    		•
  •     Criminal trespass
    		•
  •     Disorderly conduct
    		•
  •     Harassment
    		•
  •     Neighbor dispute

    		•
    Notes: Felonies can be mediated successfully at various points of the case when all parties are willing.

    VORP cannot mediate in cases involving domestic violence where one party may be in danger.

    Victims and Offenders must usually be identifiable individuals, not representatives of retail stores, corporations, agencies, or government.

    Cases involving addictions often are not mediatable, but can be referred to the appropriate source for treatment.



    B. The disputants sign an agreement between them to resolve the problem to the satisfaction of all parties.

    Parties sign an agreement to respect the confidentiality requirement.

    Parties understand that mediation can result in an informal adjustment of the situation as an alternate to court decision.

    Parties understand that mediation can result in a contract, which is a legally binding agreement.

    Parties have their rights explained as to their options if the mediation does not fully resolve the situation.

    A broken agreement can result in additional court action.
